The Fort Calhoun Enhancement Committee is a volunteer committee formed by
the City Council in January of 2000 for the purpose of beautifying the city and
making our community ready for the influx of visitors during the
Lewis and Clark 200th anniversary celebration that took place in August of 2004.
The committee has worked on a variety of projects. The group received grants from the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum to place
a pocket park in front of City Hall and to landscape around the "Welcome to
Fort Calhoun" signs on the north and south ends of town.As part of the pocket park project they also replaced the sidewalks in
front and on the sides of City Hall. Donations
from private citizens allowed for the purchase of a bench and sign to be placed
in the park in memory of Rosie Freburg, who served as the City Clerk for 25
years.
A $12,750 donation from Fort Calhoun Stone, which the city matched with
Keno funds, was used for the purchase of decorative downtown lighting.
The Fort Calhoun Building Improvement Program was created to help fund projects that enhanced the exterior appearance
of commercial buildings located on Hwy. 75, Monroe Street, and Madison Street in the city of Fort Calhoun. This program was made possible through the generosity of Cargill, who donated $10,000 to the Fort Calhoun Enhancement Committee to
further their efforts in improving the appearance of Fort Calhoun. Ten businesses
received assistance through this program.
The committee is always looking for volunteers with fresh ideas.
If you are interested, or have questions about the group, please contact
Linda Welsher, City Clerk, at 468-5303.
